The five-game T20I series between India and South Africa kicks off at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday. The team led by KL Rahul started training for the series on Monday. Umran Malik impressed everyone with his performances in the IPL as he took 22 wickets for SunRisers Hyderabad and made the second fastest delivery of the season at 157 mph. So we have to see if he has a chance in the first T20I against the Proteas.

Head Coach Rahul Dravid spoke to reporters during a press conference at Arun Jaitley Stadium and he gave his thoughts on the Jammu playmaker and what he can bring to the table.

“Yeah, it’s exciting. He certainly played fast and with pace. Another thing that has been interesting for me watching the IPL from the outside is the number of Indian bowlers who play fast. And obviously being a coach of the three formats in the game, I’d love to see that translated into the longer formats in the game. But it’s great to see Umran in the net, you can see he has that rhythm,” Dravid said.

“Obviously he’s learning. He’s a young lad and he’s getting better, better. The more he’s able to play, the better he’s going to improve. From our perspective, very happy to have someone ‘one like him in the We have to see how much playing time we can give him, we have to be realistic, we have a big squad, it’s not possible to give everyone playing time. I think that I’m definitely someone who likes to have that consistency give people you and let him feel settled in the positions It would be an interesting time to see how much playing time we give Umran we also have Arshdeep here who is also brilliant. We have experience in the form of guys who have been with us before, Harshal, Bhuvi, Avesh. There are some things we need to look at but it’s nice and exciting to have some young guys in the mix too. It gave us an opportunity to expand our pool and see what they can do,” he said. l added.

The senior players – Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah – were all rested for the T20I against South Africa. Youngsters like Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh who impressed in the recently concluded IPL got an opportunity in the show.

KL Rahul will lead the Indian team in Rohit’s absence. Veteran wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik also made his return to the team thanks to a strong showing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL.
