Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni on Angel Di Maria, opponents

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni spoke about Angel Di Maria and playing against countries from different continents.

Lionel Scaloni will want to make it two trophies won as a national team coach. When he took over as coach of the Argentina national team, many players had retired or were nearing the end of their cycle. One of those players was Angel Di Maria.

However, Di Maria is playing arguably some of the best football ever for the Argentina national team. In an interview with TyC Sports, he spoke about the World Cup draw and the possibility of players being left out of the squad. But he also talked about Angel Di Maria. Here is what he had to say:

“I don’t know if it’s Di Maria’s best moment with the national team but it’s the one in which he is most recognized. He played unforgettable matches but when he wins a title, it only makes magnify everything.

I remember some of his matches in 2012, 2013, 2014, they were frankly unforgettable. It wouldn’t be fair to say it’s his best moment but yes, the most recognized because he won (a trophy) and he won it with his goal.

Scaloni also commented on what he said to Di Maria after the 2018 World Cup:

“When the 2018 World Cup ended, I was the one who said to him: ‘You don’t have to leave the national team anyway, let the coach not call you “and then the coach who would end up not calling him was me.

On not calling him to the team:

“We never doubted him as a player or as a person, we have a great relationship. At that time (2019) we had a reason for his absence. Nico Gonzalez started wearing the jersey of the national team and we saw them in the same position, on the left.

“After that we had Angel on the right because he gave us balance to defend and balance in attack so at that time we preferred that he not be called but nothing more than that. never happened. We always knew he was going to be with us.

“He asked to play, which makes sense for any footballer and even more so for someone of his level.

Regarding the team and the opponents:

“During the 2019 Copa America, we had some good matches, we had our moments against Brazil, we lost. We started the playoffs well then came the Copa America which we won, which we started off playing badly, with some shortcomings in the second half. That the team couldn’t continue to play the same way.

“The opponents played us differently than now, they respect us more now. After winning the Copa, everything was gone (the pressure) and we started to play more freely. Everything that was asked of them, they did for 60, 70, 80 minutes or the whole game and now it’s more consolidated.

“I don’t know if there is a disadvantage in not playing against other continents during those years, we would have liked to play them but I wouldn’t call it a disadvantage. We had the chance to play against the Germany, but they have changed coaches We would have liked to play against national teams from different continents but I am convinced that our team will face every match in the same way and show themselves against any rival.
